Maben Group is pleased to announce our appointment by The University of Melbourne to build a contemporary Australian art museum which will operate in conjunction with the University’s Ian Potter Museum of Art.

In one of the most significant acts of arts philanthropy to an Australian University, property developer and passionate art collector, Michael Buxton, has donated his private contemporary Australian art collection to the University of Melbourne.

The new purpose built art museum will house and showcase the Michael Buxton Collection to students,
researchers and the general public.

In constructing the museum, Maben Group will refurbish and extend the former heritage listed Victoria Police Stores.

Originally built in 1912 as part of the Victorian Police Depot, the building is home to the Faculty of Victorian College of the Arts and the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music (VCA & MCM).

Maben Group are working closely with RBA Heritage Architects and Fender Katsalidis Architects who have designed a modern building which will emerge from the heritage listed former Police Stores.

Works will involve construction of a two level modern gallery space in a new building and the conservation and preservation of the heritage building and façade.

Buxton Contemporary will be central to the Melbourne Art Precinct – located on the corner of Southbank Boulevard and Dodds Street at the University’s Southbank Campus.
